My mission: untangling complexity for better patient care
What truly fascinates me is the inherent complexity of providing overarching organisational competence when a service is often delivered by disparate individual consultants. These professionals often hold varying ideas and have evolved over time, not always in a planned manner. This makes teamwork challenging to integrate, and considerable effort is often required to align expectations and performance. Our mission is to work towards the best interests of both the patient and their caring institution.
Decades of diverse experience and leadership
With fifty years as a doctor, I've had the privilege of working in a wide variety of healthcare systems, including those in the USA, Australia, Sweden, Vietnam, and, of course, the UK. I've led several national specialist societies and advised on committees and boards within governance institutions such as the Royal College of Surgeons. My experience also includes undertaking reviews of healthcare providers in surgical specialties, sitting on Boards of Directors for museums, and fulfilling various public duties. I am also an educator, editor of textbooks, author of scientific articles, and a lecturer on leadership matters, making me uniquely qualified to review and advise across many domains.

What truly distinguishes my approach and expertise is my ability to adopt a "stand-back" or planetary view of organisations. This allows me to observe them at a very detailed, drilled-down level while simultaneously appreciating their standing within their broader environment. This holistic perspective ensures that all recommendations are not only precise but also contextually relevant.

About Simon Kay
Professor Simon Kay was born in Kuwait in 1952, raised in Guernsey, Channel Islands, and educated at Shrewsbury and Oxford (Christ Church). He graduated from Oxford University Medical school fifty years ago. He trained I Genral Surgery, including orthopaedic surgery, and specialised I plastic surgery.
He has trained, or worked, in healthcare in Australia, Sweden, the USA and Vietnam, and for the last forty years developed a comprehensive servie at Leeds.
There he founded specialised services in Hand surgery, Nerve Surgery, and Children’s Surgery. Latterly he designed and incepted the UKs only Hand Transplant Service, working closely with renal services, transplant services and central commissioning.
He has been President (Chair) of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, and British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, and has served on numerous committees and councils within specialty services. In his hospital career he has lead the Local Negotiating Committee of the BMA, and was awarded the Health Service Journal “Clinical Leader of the Year”.
He has been a committed educator, designing and running amongst others, an international series of courses (now in its 9th iteration) that is the benchmark for education in Hand Surgery in Europe. He teaches internationally as a keynote speaker and is ont confined to his specialty areas of medicine, but speaks on podcasts and at live events on leadership in healjthcare and the offerings of a career in healing.
He has authored over 100 academic papers, has been Editor in Chief of two major text books (including the Oxford Textbook of Plastic Surgery, >1000 pp) and was the reforming Editor of the British Journal of Plastic Surgery, turning it into the Journal of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, one of the two most authoritative journals in its field.
Professor Kay has extensive experience of medico legal work, of advising coronial enquiries and of reviewing cases, conduct and services.
